Rituals and Readings

If you have a poem, a lyric from your favourite song or a verse from you favourite book – something that is meaningful to the both of you.  Perhaps you’ve penned something yourself about your loved one?  Then, that should be your reading.  You should choose somebody who would do that reading justice (if can be you, if you’d like) and boom – that’s something to remember.

If you don’t have anything that is close to you heart and you’re not that fussed on whether you have a reading or not – then don’t.  Instead, you might have have a sibling tell the funny/romantic/peculiar story of how you met, or have a friend tell the story of that one time when you were on holiday and there was a moment that you just knew you were going to spend the rest of your lives together.

If you just want a lovely poem to choose from, then I have a few here for you…..

The Wedding Vow
Author: Unknown

You are not the air that I breathe,
You are the sweet scent that drifts upon it
You are not the food that I need,
You are the nourishment of my soul
You are not my will to survive
You are my reason for living
It is with you that I experience the wonders of the world
It is with you that I triumph over the challenges in my path
It is your partnership that will lead me
to the fulfilment of my dreams
It is your friendship that guides me
as I learn and grow
It is your patience and wisdom
that calms my restless nature
It is through you that I know my true self
I do not take you for granted, I cherish you
I do not need you, I choose you
I choose you today in witness of all the people who love us
I choose you tomorrow in the privacy of our hearts
I choose you in strength and weakness
I choose you in health and in sickness
I choose you in joy and sorrow
I will choose you, over all others,
every day for all the days of my life

Love is Patient and Kind

Love is patient and kind
love is not jealous or boastful
it is not arrogant or rude.
Love does not insist on its own way
it is not irritable or resentful
it does not rejoice at wrong
but rejoices in the right
Love bears all things,
believes all things,
hopes all things,
endures all things.
Love never ends.

Commitment Ceremony

From The Art Of Marriage
Author: William A Petersen

A good marriage must be created.
In the marriage, the little things are the big things.
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say, “I love you” at least once a day.
It is never going to sleep angry.
It is at no time taking the other for granted;
the courtship should not end with the honeymoon,
it should continue through all the years.
It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.
It is standing together facing the world.
It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.
It is doing things for each other,
not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice,
but in the spirit of joy.
It is speaking words of appreciation,
and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is not expecting the husband to wear a halo
or the wife to have the wings of an angel.
It is not looking for perfection in each other.
It is cultivating flexibility, patience,
Understanding and a sense of humor.
It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
It is giving each other an atmosphere
in which each can grow.
It is finding room for the things of the Spirit.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is establishing a relationship in which
the independence is equal, dependence is mutual,
and the obligation is reciprocal.
It is not only marrying the right partner,
it is BEING the right partner.
This is “The Art of Marriage”.

I Like You
Author: Sandol Stoddard Warburg

I like you and I know why. I like you because you are a good person to like. I like you because when I tell you something special, you know it’s special, and you remember it a long, long time. You say, remember when you told me something special, and both of us remember.

When I think something is important you think it’s important too. We have good ideas. When I say something funny, you laugh. I think I’m funny and you think I’m funny too.

I like you because you know where I’m ticklish. And you don’t tickle me there except just a little tiny bit sometimes. But if you do, then I know where to tickle you too. You know how to be silly – that’s why I like you. If I am getting ready to pop a paper bag, then you are getting ready to jump.

I like you because when I am feeling sad. You don’t always cheer me up right away. Sometimes it is better to be sad. You can’t stand the others being so googly and gaggly every single minute. You want to think about things. It takes time. I like you because if I am mad at you. Then you are mad at me too. It’s awful when the other person isn’t. They are so nice and oooh you could just about punch them on the nose.

I can’t remember when I didn’t like you. It must have been lonesome then. Even if it was the 999th of July. Even if it was August. Even if it was way down at the bottom of November. I would go on choosing you. And you would go on choosing me. Over and over again. And that’s how it would happen every time.

Wedding Readings

Why Marriage?
Author: Dena Acolatse

Because to the depths of me, I long to love one person,
With all my heart, my soul, my mind, my body…
Because I need a forever friend to trust with the intimacies of me,
Who won’t hold them against me,
Who loves me when I’m unlikable,
Who sees the small child in me, and
Who looks for the divine potential of me…
Because I need to cuddle in the warmth of the night
With someone who thanks God for me,
With someone I feel blessed to hold…
Because marriage means opportunity
To grow in love, in friendship…
Because marriage is a discipline
To be added to a list of achievements…
Because marriages do not fail, people fail
When they enter into marriage
Expecting another to make them whole…
Because, knowing this,
I promise myself to take full responsibility
For my spiritual, mental and physical wholeness
I create me,
I take half of the responsibility for my marriage
Together we create our marriage…
Because with this understanding
The possibilities are limitless.

I will be here
Author: Steven Curtis Chapman

If in the morning when you wake,
If the sun does not appear,
I will be here.
If in the dark we lose sight of love,
Hold my hand and have no fear,
I will be here.
I will be here,
When you feel like being quiet,
When you need to speak your mind I will listen.
Through the winning, losing, and trying we’ll be together,
And I will be here.
If in the morning when you wake,
If the future is unclear,
I will be here.
As sure as seasons were made for change,
Our lifetimes were made for years,
I will be here.
I will be here,
And you can cry on my shoulder,
When the mirror tells us we’re older.
I will hold you, to watch you grow in beauty,
And tell you all the things you are to me.
We’ll be together and I will be here.
I will be true to the promises I’ve made,
To you and to the one who gave you to me.
I will be here.

He’s not perfect
Author: Bob Marley

He’s not perfect.
You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect.
But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can.
He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break.
Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect for more than he can give.
Don’t analyze.
Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there.
Love hard when there is love to be had.
Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you
